The Choral Masterworks Series, Vol. 1: The Legacy of F. Melius Christiansen.
Ever since its initial concert tour in 1920, from its St. Olaf College home in then-rural Minnesota to the East Coast, the St. Olaf Choir has continued to be one of the most celebrated choral ensembles in America. Under the direction of its founder, F. Melius Christiansen (1871-1955), the St. Olaf Choir was heard live by thousands in concerts performed from coast to coast and in Europe during annual tours from 1920 until 1941. During this period, with radio and recording in their infancy, the Choir made only two recordings (78s), issued by Victor in 1927. A project to preserve the recorded history of the St. Olaf Choir was initiated, saving the rare examples of the St. Olaf Choir's singing under F. These have been re-recorded for permanent preservation by the best means known today.
