Wazoo is a live album by Frank Zappa, posthumously released in October 2007 as a 2-CD set consisting of the complete concert given by "The Mothers of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo" 20-piece big band on September 24, 1972 at the Music Hall, Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

Most of this album is instrumental, yet it is complete and imaginative, actively supported by a big band. When "For Calvin (And His Next Two Hitch-Hikers" starts, it starts with passion and a very entertaining original jazzy touch, which is there the whole song. There are some similarities between Frank Zappa's big band fusion album and the highly rated Hot Rats, but in my opinion The Grand Wazoo is the stronger album. The 13-minute title track is the album's tour de force with its large-scale exploration of the main themes. These are presented mainly by the winds and developed with the use of different tempos, solos and tutti passages.

The music, some of which is meticulously notated and some of which is improvised, is a testimony to how brilliantly Zappa succeeds at accomplishing his goal. The 20-piece group he assembled (which includes instruments like oboe, cello, bass clarinet, bassoon, euphonium, and contrabass sarrusophone) is a far cry from the standard group of the era, but the music was intended largely for fans of rock and jazz willing to have their boundaries stretched,.

Frank Zappa didn't invent the word "wazoo" or proliferate its usage. However, he was the first to use it in an album and song title that, surprisingly, had no accompanying lly censorable lyrics. A surprisingly innocent and simple image for a Frank Zappa tune to evoke. Track Listing: The Grand Wazoo; For Calvin (and his next two hitchhikers); Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus; Eat That Question; Blessed Relief.

The Grand Wazoo, Zappa’s May 1973 LP, affirms this divine status. Less than a year prior, Waka/Jawaka took Zappa’s song writing capabilities to a larger scale. His progressions were polished a smidgen, his directions became clearer, and he and his band put together an excellent recording. Not so serious are the second and third songs on the album. For Calvin’ relieves the intensity of the opening track for the listener, but is it really necessary" Well, it may not be necessary, but this is a Frank Zappa album: you have to take the serious with the ridiculous. The saving grace of the tune is its quirky descent into a jazz/rock detonation; even at his silliest, Zappa keeps it musical, and therefore, keeps it real

The Grand Wazoo has long been one of my favorite Zappa albums which I believe was Zappa's first real attempt at recording a Jazz Rock fusion which I really love! This album shows how far ahead of his time he was when he gives the crowd an experience that most if not all of them had ever experienced before. A definite must have for any Zappa fan!
