Katie Von Schleicher.

It's pop opulence with the wires sticking out the back, high-end songwriting with a coat of lead paint, but those flaw and fixes give Shitty Hits a compelling outsider edge. 71. Equal parts brittle and brazen, Shitty Hits is the work of a well-past-promising newcomer.

Mostly, this debut tilts at Portishead covering the Beatles’ I Want You (She’s So Heavy), with some success. Compared with her 2015 demo collection, Bleaksploitation, the richer production allows Von Schleicher’s full-throated vocals to impress, swooping and keening above serpentine riffs and distorted drums. At first, the jauntier, slightly derivative rockers signal strongest, then the darker ballads and self-scouring lyrics lure you in.

Soon she joined Wilder Maker for a tour, and then as a full-time member. Katie is a very intuitive thinker and I think when she’s at her best she can find melodies and phrases that have the ring of the eternal, Birnbaum says.

In another sideways turn, Katie von Schleicher, veers away from the distortion and grunge that characterised her previous effort and enters a world where the production is clear and polished and songs merrily pass their time away in the seventies. "Paranoia" lifts its head above this morass in an infectious but unmemorable attempt to say something. Otherwise, I'm thinking, "The Carpenters" and that's not a good thing here. "Nothing" bucks the trend with its dark grooves that dig into your skin and flecks of discordant guitar buzz saws but then it's back to "Mary" with the fire slowly burning in the corner of the room and Katie von Schleicher strumming her guitar. "Going Down" is the other harder song that includes an interesting juxtaposition with audio samples before descending into a repetitive plughole. The last song, "Sell it Back" is much more intriguing with its doom laden guitar guillotine and dark ethereal mists that swirl around the slow heatbeat of a jaded soul and fades out with a guitar reminiscent of The Stone Roses "I am the Resurrection", of all things. Inneresting....
