Niels Henrik David Bohr (7 October 1885 – 18 November 1962) was a Danish physicist. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922 for his contributions which were essential to modern understandings of atomic structure and quantum mechanics. The poet, too, is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images and establishing mental connections.

Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist known for making a model of the atom. His model helped explain how atoms are structured and how the parts of atoms behave. Niels was a good student. He was even better at sports. He and his brother were excellent soccer players. In high school, Niels showed a talent for mathematics and physics. In 1903 he went to the University of Copenhagen to study physics. In 1912 Bohr went to England to work with British scientist Ernest Rutherford. The year before, Rutherford had developed a model of the atom. In Rutherford’s model, very light, negatively charged electrons circled around a heavy, positively charged nucleus.

Niels Bohr was born and educated in Copenhagen, Denmark. He lived, worked, and died there, too. But his mark on science and history was worldwide. His professional work and personal convictions were part of the larger stories of the century. At the University of Copenhagen, he studied physics and played soccer (though not as well as his brother, who helped the 1908 Danish soccer team win an Olympic silver medal). In addition to his major contributions to theoretical physics, Bohr was an excellent administrator. He died at home in 1962, following a stroke. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a very narrow field.
