Vittorio Gui conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Cast includes Joan Sutherland, Nicola Filacuridi, John Kentish and Giuseppe Modesti. Disc: 1. 1. I Puritani, opera: Act 1. Introduzione. 2. All'erta! All'erta! L'alba apparì, 3. O di Cromwell guerrieri. 4. A festa! 5. Recitativo ed Aria. Or dove fuggo io mai? 6. Ah! per sempre io ti perdei. Vittorio Gui's conducting can be a hair on the slow side at times, but his musicmanship wins out in the end. There aren't as many visceral thrills as Bonynge would bring to the opera, but that's not the only aspect of this score. I haven't said much about Sutherland. Her voice is at its freshest and most girlish at this stage in her career. She sounded so sincere in this role; it can be very touching.

This album has an average beat per minute of 86 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 64/124 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Info for Bellini: I Puritani. Pavarotti made only one studio recording of I Puritani. In 1973 he recorded the opera with Richard Bonynge conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and with Joan Sutherland as Elvira. with Sutherland, Bonynge and all on electrifying form.

Sutherland's great sense of drama masterfully conveys the inner turmoil of Elvira, daughter of a Puritan family, driven to madness by her love for Arturo, a Royalist. The climactic scene with Arturo, which takes up most of the final act, brims with vivid contrasts and a mesmerising range of emotion in which Sutherland bedazzles.

I puritani (The Puritans) is an opera by Vincenzo Bellini. It was originally written in two acts and later changed to three acts on the advice of Gioachino Rossini, with whom the young composer had become friends. The music was set to a libretto by Count Carlo Pepoli, an Italian émigré poet whom Bellini had met at a salon run by the exile Princess Belgiojoso, which became a meeting place for many Italian revolutionaries.
