Frottole - Popular Songs. has been added to your Cart. They are brimming with personality and charm. The Ring Around Quartet (now there’s a memorable name!) is comprised of 4 accomplished vocalists from Italy: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone. Their singing is topnotch, whether it be solo or collectively. The articulation, intonation and blend could not be significantly improved upon. Each song is vividly and idiomatically rendered.

Alle stamegne, donne Anonymous; Ring Around Quartet; Ring Around Consort. This recording explores a representative selection of Italian frottole, including works published by the historically pivotal figure Ottaviano Petrucci, from the original books printed in the early 1500s. Set to vernacular texts dealing mainly with the theme of love, frottole were short, improvisatory polyphonic songs with instrumental accompaniment that flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy for some 40 years between 1480 and 1520. Set to vernacular texts dealing mainly with the theme of love, frottole were short, improvisatory polyphonic songs with instrumental accompaniment that flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy for some forty years between c. 1480 and 1520. Despite it's apparent simplicity, this completely new genre of song inspired some of Europe's greatest vocal and instrumental musicians. The recent invention of movable type added further to it's popularity.

The rhythms are bouncy and syncopated, fitting the poetry closely. Histories of Renaissance music tend to skate past them quickly in favor of the more musically complex madrigal and chanson, but the frottola had no deficit in prestige in its own time; the learned northerners who were brought to Italy to compose music for its princes wrote some of the most famous examples, Josquin's El grillo (The Cricket) chief among them.
