Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill for the Böst label in New York City around 1944. There was probably no other Zeitoper in history that attracted more contemporary recordings, and these have been reissued numerous times starting back in the LP era, but more recently on Pearl, Capriccio, and in the deluxe boxed set on Bear Family devoted to all of Lenya's recordings. You do not get the complete Kroll Opera Orchestra recording of the Little Threepenny under Otto Klemperer, but just part of it, and the work isn't even identified as such.

Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (German: Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny) is a political-satirical opera composed by Kurt Weill to a German libretto by Bertolt Brecht. It was first performed on 9 March 1930 at the Neues Theater in Leipzig. Weill was asked by the 1927 Baden-Baden music festival committee to write a one act chamber opera for the festival.

Kurt Weill's widow, Lotte Lenya, supervised the 1956 recording sessions, so you can be sure it sounds as close to the 1927 original production as possible. For anyone interested in Weill's music, and a historically interesting look at the arts of Weimar Germany in the late '20's, this is a must-have. 4 people found this helpful. It is among the dramatic highlights of the show, and Lenya has stamped her name on this song forever. This score is undeniably inventive, just listen to the underscoring in the opening dialogue between Fatty and Trinity-Moses. Then there is the brass and woodwind fugue that represents the approach of the typhoon, and all of the above-mentioned songs.

Weill’s wife Lotte Lenya (not a trained opera singer) immortalized some of the songs in her recordings and sang the role of Jenny in the opera’s Berlin premiere in 1931. More recently, the ‘Alabama Song’ has been sung in cover versions by artists and groups including The Doors, Ute Lemper and David Bowie. Amerika Brecht sited his pleasure city in ‘Amerika’; a fantasy land that reflected the dreams of his century.
