6. Tempo di Menuetto. Symphony No. 19 in D major, H. 1/19.
Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 17-21.
For the album by the Oregon Symphony, see Haydn Symphonies (album). There are 106 symphonies by the classical composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). 21 in A major (1764). 22 in E♭ major, Philosopher (1764). 23 in G major (1764). Also, in 1990, another attempt at a complete Haydn cycle on period instruments began with the Hanover Band led from the keyboard by Roy Goodman for Hyperion Records. Unfortunately, after releasing 57 symphonies on 17 CDs, this project ran out of funds in 1994. There are two active attempts to record the complete cycle. As of early 2015, Thomas Fey has passed the halfway point of recording all the symphonies - 57 plus the Sinfonia Concertante in 22 volumes so far - with the Heidelberger Sinfoniker (one volume with the Schlierbacher Kammerorchester) for hänssler CLASSIC.

Between 1776 and 1772, Haydn composed 17 symphonies in which he took the form's emotional and musical content to a new level. On this CD, Roy Goodman conducts the Hanover Band on period instruments and uses a harpsichord continuo. The recording dates from the early 1990s and is on the low-priced Helios label. I have been greatly impressed by Goodman's performance of the Haydn symphonies, and this CD is among his finest. The Symphony no 42 in D major was new to me, and it deserves to be heard. It is an expansive, ambitious work of pure, nonprogrammatic music.

I discovered that Hogwood's Haydn symphonies are uploaded on youtube. I am liking what I am hearing. If you're wanting Haydn Symphonies on "period instruments" I would check out Roy Goodman's Hanover Band. He never completed the cycle either but he did record a lot of the Symphonies. Bruggen, Kuijken and Pinnock also have done some good recordings on Period Instruments. Mar-12-2014, 17:36 DrMike.
