Plastic Palace People. Plastic Palace People. From the Host of Late-Comers. The latest sonic throw-down between O'Rourke and Heemann; a state where it's almost impossible to determine who is responsible for what. The plastic people have melted together, that's why! Works.

Plastic Palace People is from Scott 2, the most commercially successful of the four revered solo albums Walker released between 1967 and 1969. This music is not rock, but it’s effortlessly cool. It was in many ways quite unlike anything else produced at the time. John Franz, who had produced the Walker Brothers, now brought in orchestral arranger Wally Stott. At Walker’s request, most of his albums from the wilderness years (‘Til the Band Comes In, almost a Scott 5, is easily the best of these) have never been reissued. Which means they have largely been forgotten, which is a shame, since there is much to enjoy on them and his voice always sounds perfect. The Walker Brothers reunited in 1974, and the following year released their version of Tom Rush’s No Regrets, which was Scott’s only bona fide commercial success from this period.

Scott walker ‘Plastic palace people’ (from scott 2, philips, 1968). Scott 2 was Walker’s most successful album of this period, briefly topping the UK charts. But it’s the framing of Walker’s lines – the work, as with all of Scott’s late 60s albums, of arranger Wally Stott – that really lifts them into the sublime. Put simply, this record is, for my money, the best of Walker’s early era; the goldilocks zone where songwriting, arrangement, theme and mood come together. Walker famously deploys a host of unusual instrumentation on the album, the iconic peak of which is the use of a pork joint as percussion in ‘Clara’, perhaps The Drift’s finest moment. As always with Walker, the sound is in service to the lyrics – in this case a rumination on the public execution of Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, and the subsequent desecration of their corpses.

Plastic palace people Sing silent songs, they dream too long Their memories just stare Plastic palace Alice She steals her cards tomorrow deals With deafening despair. Hurry, you've got to get in line Your nose might start to shine And sweat it out and dance about The whole eternal life.
