Lamentazione, or laments for the crucified Jesus Christ, called forth an antique style, with heavy use of polyphony and sometimes polychoral (multiple-choir) textures. Yet the composers represented here didn't simply write pieces in the Palestrina style: they intensified the old polyphonic idiom with rich chromaticism and expressive dissonances.

Les Arts Flo, en bref. William Christie, directeur musical fondateur. Paul Agnew, directeur musical adjoint. Aujourd'hui à 16h30 sur Mezzo ARMIDE de Lully par Les Arts Florissants Avec Stéphanie d'Oustrac, Paul Agnew, Marc Mauillon Mise en scène Enregistré au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Les Arts Florissants: Lamentazione. Sombre in everything except harmony and discord, this is a lush and textured album sung with exemplary clarity. October 8 2011, 1:01am, The Times. Fabulous pile-ups of dissonances and a polychoral lushness characterise most of the music, sung with exemplary clarity and expression by Les Arts Florissants under the British tenor, Paul Agnew. The astringency of the upper voices gives more bite to those spine-shivering discords. Virgin Classics; out now).

Les Arts Florissants is a Baroque musical ensemble in residence at the Théâtre de Caen in Caen, France. The organization was founded by conductor William Christie in 1979. The ensemble derives its name from the 1685 opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The organization consists of a chamber orchestra of period instruments and a small vocal ensemble. Current notable members include soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Paul Agnew, who has served as assistant conductor since 2007
